Day 3

BACK TO DAY 2

Day 3  New Year’s Eve with a full day and evening of activities. Starting with a morning of shopping or optional excursions then a leisurely afternoon resting up for for the evening festivities.

At 6:00 our merry gang will assemble at Port9 which will have been transformed into our private banquet hall. A sumptuous multi course meal paired with exquisite wines will be created by chef Gunnar Páll Rúnarsson.

After the dinner we will move out on the town to view the massive bonfires that ring the city. The bonfires are believed to have a pagan origin and are connected to the belief that elves and hidden people are on the move on New Year’s Eve, and that the bonfires are intended to light their way. The New Year’s bonfires are a great warm-up for the highlight of the evening, the fireworks.

Finally fireworks! In Iceland, everyone buys fireworks. All of the fireworks you see are ignited by private citizens who have done their civic duty and purchased them from ICE-SAR Iceland’s nonprofit Search and Rescue team. This is actually their most profitable fundraiser every year. The more they spend on fireworks the more they help. The firework action has been slowly building all day and will reach a high point at stroke of midnight. By then it’s  complete pyrotechnic  madness.
